Cyber Bullying and Mental Health Issues Highlighted at Downlands as we welcome Galaxy Thief

In a society where technology is a large part of young people’s life we are very conscious that social media can be used in inappropriate ways.  Young people get tired of old ‘out of touch’ adults trying to warn them about the dangers, so it was with great pleasure that we welcomed indie pop group “Galaxy Thief” to school last week.  With influences from Ed Sheerhan to Bastille, they performed several tunes – some cover and some of their own originals which went down a storm with the students.  The four piece band then spoke about how cyber bullying and issues around anxiety and depression had affected them when they were younger and how to stay safe online.  Then Jamie, George, Ren and Ben went back to their instruments and played another set – and we all got up and danced.  Ms Duncumb said “It was a privilege to witness such a special moment – the connection between the band and the students was amazing!”.  One student said “Even though it was at school, that was brilliant!”.  What a lovely way to spend the morning!
