Covid-19 Update – Message from the Headteacher

Dear Parents/Carers,

I am writing to update you on our plans for the next two days of school. Due to increasing staff shortages, school will be closed for students in year 8 and 9. Students in years 7, 10 and 11 should attend school as normal.
For the next two days students in years 8 and 9 should use the online resources outlined in the letter sent on Tuesday. These resources can also be found at the foot of this letter in the Appendix. Over the next two days staff will be preparing to move to the setting of work via email, also outlined in Tuesday’s letter. This will begin on Monday and the link to our expectations in terms of this is:

If you are a key worker and a parent of a student in year 8 or 9, school will be open for your children. This also applies to vulnerable groups including children with EHCP’s and those who have a social worker. If you wish to exercise this option, please could you email us at office@downlands.w-sussex.sch.uk so we have an idea of numbers. In the current circumstances we do not have a definition of ‘key worker’ so if you feel that you are delivering a vital service, or your child is in a vulnerable group, please ask your child to report to the canteen at 8.45am.

If you are not aware of the latest news on the closure of schools in England from Friday, please click on the following link.

The government also announced that GCSE exams will not take place this summer but that students would not be disadvantaged in terms of their next steps. Clearly this is an upsetting time for our year 11’s and we will be addressing them tomorrow morning to give further guidance. A separate letter will be sent to parents of year 11 students this evening.

I will communicate further with parents about arrangements for the period after Friday. At the moment there is insufficient information available for me to comment further on this.
Please bear with us at this difficult time and stay safe.

Yours sincerely
Mark Wignall
Headteacher
