Downlands has a growing number of international links through the twinning association, international visits, and partnerships with Ellen Sharma School in India.
Through these links we give students a deeper understanding of other countries and cultures and aim to equip them with the skills they need to become active global citizens.
Downlands has been a proud recipient of a British Council Connecting Classrooms grant which recognises the valuable partnership we have with Ellen Sharma School in Chennai. Students at both schools are able to share both ideas and opinions about different global issues using a range of platforms from Padlet to Skype. As well as a variety of teacher visits, we have also taken KS4 students to visit the school in 2015 and more recently in July 2018. Our pupils worked on joint projects with their peers in India and experienced Indian culture first hand.
Downlands is also beginning the process of a new link with a school in China. In July 2018, 35 Chinese pupils both visited and stayed with Downlands families and immersed themselves into our school. We are looking to the future to plan a return visit, most likely in 2020.
More locally, The Global Ambassadors are a focus group at Downlands who work to promote Global Issues to the school community. Over the years, they have been successful at raising awareness through the following:
- Collecting food for both Hurstpierpoint & Burgess Hill Food Bank
- Running workshops on hunger and inequalities with primary pupils at both St Lawrence & Birchwood Grove
- Raising awareness and donations for Fairtrade through the annual Fairtrade Breakfast
At Downlands, we are proud to have been re-accredited with the British Council International School Award for 2018-2021. It is a celebration of our past and continued work to promote global issues both locally and further afield.
