Literacy Across the Curriculum

At Downlands, students are expected to practise high standards of literacy in every area of the curriculum.  All teachers encourage accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar.  Displays reminding students of punctuation rules and key words are prominently displayed in classrooms.

Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 are given termly Literacy Targets which are recorded in their English and Humanities books. Literacy Mats and Leaflets are available in classrooms and for students to stick into their books or Journals, and should be used to check for literacy mistakes during lessons and when proofreading homework.

The library is available for students to access during school time and lists of recommended reads and ideas for What Next? are available from the Librarian. Students are actively encouraged to read widely and regularly both in school and at home in order to improve their literacy skills and develop their ability to emulate a range of writing styles.
