Extra Curricular Clubs & Activities

We currently in the process of transferring all of our clubs and activities onto the MCAS app.  Below are some examples of the extra curricular activities we have on offer.

Music Clubs

The Music Department is proud to offer the following extra-curricular activities:

  • Guitar club
  • Brass Band 
  • Songwriting club
  • Studio Recording club
  • The Jazz & Soul Ensemble
  • Steel Band
  • Downlands Choir
  • Orchestra

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Participation in the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award Scheme is offered to pupils towards the end of Y9, to start in Y10. The award is achieved by completing four very different sections: Physical, Skill, Volunteering and Expedition, and the idea is the participants will learn to be individual, resilient, increase fitness, learn new skills, care about community spirit. With two expedition’s involving two days walking and an overnight camp, they will also learn the value of teamwork. The award is coordinated by Mr Tilly and is open to all.  

 

 

Sports Activities

From Badminton to Ultimate Frisbee, there is something for everyone at Downlands. All students are encouraged to attend one or more of the extra curricular clubs and some students represent the school at both county and national level. Sporting clubs available during the lunch hour or after school include:

Science clubs are designed to encourage students’ curiosity about the world around them. Science clubs take place during the school day and after school. They include:

  • Eco Club
  • STEM Club
  • Science GSCE Workshop (Y11)

 

Technology & Creative Arts

  • Art Club
  • After school Art GCSE support
  • Visiting artist workshops
  • Trip to the Natural History Museum
  • Set and props for the School production
  • Hassocks Goes Gold annual competition
  • Various competitions and exhibitions as they arise
  • Opportunity to enter The Royal Academy Children’s Competition and have work displayed in the gallery summer 2026
  • Opportunity to exhibit work locally January 2026
