Head of Teaching & Learning: Mr C Smith – RS, PDC

Mr M Stokes – RS, PDC, Achievement Leader Year 10

Mr G McCluskey

RS is a vibrant and successful department which returns some of the best results in the school in terms of pupil achievement at both Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 (GCSE). In fact, the department consistently produces the best results in county for GCSE RS, according to Epod data.  Pupil voice data also shows that RS is a very popular subject at the school.  Perhaps one of the reason for the subjects success is that it deals with issues that are relevant to all humanity and which all pupils have an opinion on, with ultimate questions such as: ‘Is it right to fight?’;  ‘What happens when we die?’ and ‘Why is there so much poverty in  a world that is so rich?’  The subject is taught by a team of specialists, who are mostly of non-specific religious persuasion, but who approach the subject dispassionately and objectively, giving the pupils the information and skills they need to develop their own opinions and spirituality in a safe and supportive environment. Pupils are taught to be tolerant of the views of others in an increasingly interdependent world where a variety of religious and non-religious views co-exist side by side.

The Head of Department is Mr Smith and he is ably assisted by Mr Stokes who is also an RS specialist. For more information on the content of the syllabus please refer to the curriculum maps.
